Bring your favorite kata or your current test kata, and we'll break down how the five principles of kata can make it better. We'll also use them as a roadmap for teaching and training towards mastery!
This is a fun kata for all ranks which includes lots of strikes using the tiger claw hand technique. Must be able to do forward and back rolls.
Monkey strategy is to wear down an opponent by harassment tactics and avoiding their strength. In 1974 in the UF gym basement, O’Sensei Ngo Dong taught Sensei’s Tak Fung and John Kay Hou Quyen (monkey form). It is or was a Vovinam form; O'Sensei spoke of it originating with Vovinam founder Nguyen Loc.
This is a class where we will discuss Preflight, Fight, and Post Knife SD. Plus, disarms.
This class will focus on applications and drills (louie ta-ta-ta, 12-combo, sinwali, etc.) along with gaining confidence in your own ‘stick’ weapon training. Escrima sticks or tambos for partner drills. Bring 2 sticks.
This classic kata was brought from Vietnam by O Sensei Ngo Dong, and often featured in early public Cuong Nhu demonstrations. It has a deceptively simple elegance, animal spirit, and sophisticated applications, all of which make it ideal for exploring, and one day mastering, the powerful flow of soft style combat that characterizes our animal forms.
Learn Tambo 3 inside and out. We will do a series of drills to help learn/improve our kata and then put it all together into a cohesive kata.

Unsu is a traditional shotokan kata. It is commonly interpreted to mean 'Cloud Hands' or 'Hands in the Clouds'. It is a long kata and has a couple of fairly acrobatic moves. Done well, it is exciting to watch.
Learn the foundational principles for working with the Tambo (short stick) and how to train/teach these principles. We will go over striking with power and precision, blocking, mobility, use of the off hand, and simple disarms in both Yin and Yang grips. (I will provide some tambos, but students are encouraged to bring their own)
